“Battlestar Galactica shows us so many women in positions of power,” Brennan said, “which is unique not only for sci-fi as a genre, but for television in general.”
The women in BSG are represented in a variety of forms, generally speaking though, BSG is very pro-female. The majority of the women in the show are bold, opinionated women who take control of their own lives. Laura Roslin is forced to take a front-line role when she is sworn in as President, this demanding position is a battle of its own, as well as her own personal battle with cancer she manages to come out fighting. This is a very positive role model for women. Kara Thrace is generally seen as the tomboy, she gambles, drinks, smokes and is rude to the people around her, this is stereotypically male characteristics so it is interesting to see this persona in a woman. She is very admirable for this. Number Six is the idealistic woman, she is sexy and uses this to get what she wants. Although feminists may criticise her for using her ‘assests’ to get what she wants it cannot be denied that she is a decisive, strong woman who knows where her strengths lie.
American channel and home of Battlestar Galactica and spin-off Caprica, SyFy, are now said to be looking for a new Battlestar Galactica spin-off. Surely two movies and a whole spin-off programme are enough?
“We’re looking for other ways to spin off ‘Battlestar’ beyond ‘Caprica’. That world is so rich. We’re sitting down with (executive producer) Ron Moore and his team. It would not necessarily be a traditional series.” – Mark Stern, Syfy development exec
So apparently not, this new branch of the Battlestar franchise is supposedly said to return to the show’s “space opera roots”. It was rumoured last month that despite Caprica’s moderate performance in live ratings the prequel would get another season. So could the Galactica return again into deep space? Keep your eye’s open for more information
